Ayvalık Cunda Island is thought to be Galat from the Yunda Islands in Kitab-ı Bahriye by sailor and cartographer Piri Reis. Also known as Alibey Island, the name of the region comes from the name of the hero who resisted enemy troops during the War of Independence. The name ''Moshonis'', meaning ''Scented Island'', also appears in the history of the region known by both names. Alibey, or Cunda Island, and its surroundings bore the name Ekatonisos in B.C. In response to this name, the name of the region began to be called Moshonisia upon a statement by geographer Strabon. One of the two ideas put forward for the name Moshos is the beautiful scents emitted by the plants in the region, and the other is thought to be a pirate named Moshos who lived on the islands in the region in ancient times. Balıkesir Cunda Island, which is known to be rich in terms of vegetation and ecosystem, stands out among the Ayvalık Islands. The fact that the other islands are empty and covered with bushes and that there are no plants that emit a pleasant scent on these islands makes it more likely that the name was taken from the pirate Moshos, who is thought to have lived in the region. The population of the island consists of Turks who migrated from the islands of Crete and Lesbos. Thanks to this, the elderly population of the region also knows and speaks Greek and the Greek language. The Greeks give the name Nesos to the island, which has also gained touristic importance as a modern village. The interest of visitors to the area, which is surrounded by churches, monasteries and old Greek houses, is also great. The Greek houses, which are visited with admiration, create a fascinating image with their interior and exterior architecture. It is also highly recommended to visit the fountains and the famous Taş Kahve, which contribute to the history of Cunda. A bridge was built in 1896 to provide road transportation to Cunda, which ensures that Ayvalık is closed to the open sea. In this way, transportation is provided much more easily. There are 8 monasteries on the island. In addition to the monasteries, the largest church in the region, Taksiyarhis Church, also opens its doors to visitors.
