This week, on Linhas Cruzadas, Andresa Boni and Luiz Felipe Pondé investigate pessimism and its manifestations. They discuss the concept of cosmic pessimism and Gnosticism, which saw the material world as the creation of an evil god. Andresa and Pondé analyze whether believing that God is evil is worse than not believing in God, and discuss pessimism in the works of philosophers such as Nietzsche and Schopenhauer. They question whether knowledge makes a person pessimistic and whether it is possible to philosophize with optimism. They reflect on political pessimism, thinking about the distrust in Brazilian institutions. In the final part, they talk about the difference between pessimism and nihilism, and whether it is possible to look at the world with optimism without being naive.
