A few years ago, Jochen Hartmann planted his first agroforestry strips, dividing his large, connected fields with hedges. The main goal was and is to reduce wind on the area. This should reduce evaporation and erosion, promote biodiversity and improve soil fertility. But we must not forget the aesthetic value for ourselves and for customers, who generally value such measures very much. Recently, another double-row strip around 450m long was planted, with perennial flower strips being planted on both sides in the next few years. Total cost of this project: around €1500-1800. Jochen's main tree species are poplars and willows. He tells us how he went about planting his new hedge and what to look out for when caring for it in the first year. Jochen also talks about the main character among the weeds on the Hartmann farm, the white goosefoot, about the challenges of systemic thinking and the advantages of career changers in agriculture.
