In our step-by-step instructions, you will learn what preliminary planning you need to do, how to properly dig your pond area and how to lay out the pond liner professionally. You will also benefit from valuable tips on planting the plants and get an overview of important pond accessories. 1. Creating a garden pond - an oasis of peace (0:15) Creating your own garden pond - it's easier than you think! Put your individual ideas into practice, after all, in this video guide you will learn step by step how you can create a professional garden pond yourself and design it to your own taste. 2. The optimal material (0:39) If you want to create your pond correctly, you should first decide on the size of the pond. If it is larger than five square meters, as in our example, we recommend using a special pond liner. For smaller ponds, prefabricated pond basins or system ponds are sufficient. 3. Planning (1:01) When choosing a location, make sure that it is easily visible and not exposed to direct sunlight, ideally not all day. To begin with, mark the desired shape with a garden hose. This way you can change and adapt the shape as you wish. Once the final shape of the pond has been determined, remove the soil along the hose. When digging, consider the following plant zones in your pond: 1) Edge area = swamp zone (water depth: 10 cm) 2) Center of the pond = shallow water zone for reeds and other plants (water depth: 30 cm) 3) Deep zone for pond and water lilies (water depth: 60-150 cm) You want to prevent pond water from being lost in an unwanted deeper area. To do this, it is very important that you check the level of the pond edges and the required depth of the planting zones after digging with a spirit level and a spirit stick. To protect the liner, you should also carefully remove any roots and stones. Next, a layer of sand is applied and the pond fleece is laid on top of this. The pond liner is later rolled out on the protective fleece. 4. Size of the pond liner (3:50) There are two ways to determine the exact size of the pond liner you need: • Measure the dug hole with a tape measure or • Calculate the size of the liner using the following formula: Length of liner = pond length + 2 x pond depth + 60 cm edge allowance Width of liner = pond width + 2 x pond depth + 60 cm edge allowance Creating a garden pond with liner - our tip: The liner is easier to lay when the outside temperature is above 15 degrees. The liner material then becomes flexible. After laying it, cut the pond liner along the edge with an overlap of 30 centimeters. To prevent it from slipping into the garden pond, dig in the excess edge afterwards. 5. Planting the pond plants (5:10) Now plant the plants. Plant baskets provide a perfect hold for plants in the deep zones. Then put a layer of stream pebbles over the bank zone to prevent the soil from floating up. 6. Useful accessories (5:59) If you are creating your own garden pond, you will need the appropriate accessories. In our example, we are using an external pond filter, an environmental pump with a foam fountain, a floating light, a water play pump with a pond figure connection, a pump pre-filter, an underwater spotlight and pond figures. Water features, streams, mini waterfalls or spring stones ensure the vital oxygen supply in the pond, especially in summer. Use pond filters to bind toxins and regulate the nutrient balance in the garden pond. 7. First filling (7:20) You now know how to create your own garden pond! You have finished laying the liner and making the necessary preparations - the last step now consists of just filling the pit. To do this, first let in a third of the water. So that the pond liner can adapt to the resulting water pressure, it is important that you fill the pond little by little. While filling, you can plant the remaining plants in the deep and shallow water zones. Our guide also offers you a clear overview of how to properly create your own pond.
