Or better yet, from around September to May at the latest; in principle, sowing can also take place in the winter months. 2. PREPARATION of the sowing area: On existing lawns or meadows, the top layer, i.e. the turf, should be removed. Firstly to thin out the grass and secondly because this removes most of the existing grasses and unwanted weeds. Remove any remaining root weeds as carefully as possible (e.g. couch grass). Time factor: If you think that a soil is particularly infested with weeds or contains a lot of dormant weed seeds, you should turn the area over the summer and leave it there for the first time to allow the summer heat to dry out as many root weeds as possible. After rainfall, a lot of dormant seeds in the soil often germinate. These can then be removed or re-worked. 3. SEED Make sure you use high-quality seed. Good seed mixes take the plant composition of the respective soil type into account. For example, seed for drier, lighter soils or heavier, fresher soils. The seed mix should contain a high level of species diversity. The seed mix is adapted to the respective location to a certain extent. This means that certain species may disappear over time, while others, species better suited to the location will remain in the long term. IMPORTANT POSTSCRIPT: Flower meadows must NEVER be fertilized. 4. SOWING 4.1. The soil must be well prepared for sowing, i.e. ensure that it has a good crumbly structure. Before sowing, the surface should be as smooth as possible, i.e. not have too many deep bumps. Roll with a light roller. After sowing, you can roll with a heavy roller. Most meadow flowers germinate in light, so they should not be covered with soil, or only minimally. Protect sloping areas against water erosion - i.e. washing away by rainwater. This can be achieved by loosely laying hay or straw on top. This is not removed as it rots or is picked up again during the first mowing. 4.2. Amount of seed The required amount of seed for many meadow flowers is 3 - 5 g/m2. You should not sow much more or less. The seed should definitely be increased in volume using an expanding material. Sawdust or non-sticky sand, for example, are suitable for this. Larger areas should be divided into a grid of equal-sized sections - to do this, simply draw grooves in the soil. If, for example, an area is divided into 9 sections, the stretched seed is also divided into 9 equal-sized parts and then scattered by hand on the area provided. 5. DEVELOPMENT CARE Watering is recommended as this gives the seed mix a germination impulse. In principle, watering is not absolutely necessary. However, germination then simply takes longer. As a seed mix consists of many different species, the germination time varies greatly. Some seeds germinate quickly, others only after the first winter, and some germinate at different times. And last but not least: PATIENCE - PATIENCE - PATIENCE Flower meadows with many perennial species need a lot of time - and patience too. It usually takes several years for them to develop well. Many of the species included only begin to flower after a few years. A certain proportion can certainly consist of annual species. These usually flower in the first or second year, but are rather short-lived and, although they sow themselves, do not necessarily have to remain in the meadow long-term. This is simply because many of these annual species are pioneer plants that require free, unvegetated soil to germinate (poppies, viper's bugloss). Free areas of soil disappear as more vegetation grows. If the area is worked again after a few years, however, they usually germinate again because the soil contains seeds.
