Creating memorable melodies by relying only on inspiration is a risky maneuver for the musician who really aspires to have his melodies sung by many people, since the techniques of melodic development are varied and, normally, they do not come alone. However, there is a technique that is widely used when designing melodies and that is within the reach of any musician regardless of their level: the melodic sequence. When we use a melodic sequence we are taking a small intervallic and rhythmic pattern and we are moving it, showing it from different points that are diatonic to the tonality in which we are. In this way we are ensuring that the listener will remember the melody because we are using the repetition of a model presented in different ways, which increases its chances of being remembered. The melodic sequence is a simple technique that does not use literal repetition, which can lead to boredom and listening fatigue, but is a very particular form of repetition that gives the listener the option of learning the melody and, therefore, remembering it.
