Korea's representative clean waters, the Dokdo sea where the cold and warm currents intersect and where biodiversity is abundant. Various marine life in the two regions where the original underwater ecosystem is alive and well will be revealed. ▶ Coral Island, Munseom 1.3km south of Seogwipo Port. Munseom is called the gateway to Seogwipo Port. The island and the surrounding waters have been designated as natural monuments, so the underwater ecosystem is well preserved. In particular, the coral underwater garden is the biggest attraction. Coral, which only lives in places where there is no floating matter and plankton is abundant, forms a colony in front of Munseom. Meet the spectacular view of the coral underwater garden spread across Munseom Island and the ecology of various creatures living around the coral. ▶ Jeju Island's new landmark, bottlenose dolphins Swish swish - Bottlenose dolphins gather around diving haenyeo. When a haenyeo dives, they circle around and whistle, which is a communication sound between dolphins. It means that the bottlenose dolphin wants to communicate with the haenyeo. A bottlenose dolphin chases a haenyeo by going up and down the water. What is it talking to the haenyeo? ▶ Dokdo's guardian deity and cave gatekeeper There is an underwater cave between Dongdo and Seodo. In that cave lives the guardian deity of Dokdo's waters, the humpback whale. It is called humpback whale because its upper head and lower jaw protrude like a hump. The humpback whale lives in caves and rock crevices, wandering around during the day in search of food and returning to its cave at night to rest. And the cave entrance is guarded by the cave gatekeeper octopus. The hunting skills of the octopus, the best predator on Dokdo, are admirable. ▶ Cheonjanggul Cave - Guests from the Tropical Sea Cheonjanggul Cave is a volcanic crater that was created when Dokdo was born. Marine life began to inhabit this cave as seawater flowed in and out. Since it is not affected by waves, small fish, especially recently, subtropical fish such as the ironclad and yellow turtlefish, live in abundance. And the blue bream, the symbol of Dokdo's clean waters. However, the blue bream is not native to Dokdo. Where did they come from and end up here? ▶ The sea, a space filled with maternal love The octopus that protects its eggs does not leave even when a typhoon rages. It is a passionate maternal love. It does not eat anything until the eggs hatch and takes good care of them. The octopus, a natural mother, never leaves her eggs alone. A space filled with passionate maternal love, the sea is not lonely. Last summer, the sea was hit hard by typhoons Sanba and Bolaven. Could the octopus have survived safely? ※ This video is from the 526th episode of the Environmental Special, “The Island That Is Not Lonely” (broadcast on January 2, 2013).
