The salvos from the battleship Schleswig-Holstein fell on the Polish transit depot on Westerplatte at 4:45. It was September 1, 1939. The Polish Army was attacked - without a declaration of war - along the entire length of the Polish-German border, and Polish cities were under German bombs. Despite the heroic fight, the Poles suffered defeat. Could we have prepared better for the war? Why did Poland decide to defend the entire border? Was our country so weak or Germany so strong? And did the cavalry in 1939 make sense? In the podcast of the Polish History Museum, Grzegorz Rutkowski from the Polish History Museum will answer these questions. The background of the story is international politics, the economic opportunities of European countries, and the traumas that terrified politicians of the free, democratic world. Our podcasts are stories about outstanding figures from centuries ago and the backstage of key events in the history of our country, interwoven with lesser-known, yet fascinating threads from the history of Poland.
