Entering into the debate on pension reform taking place in the Senate this week, economist Marcela Vera highlighted the voices that in the technical discussion have proposed “a short law that allows for an immediate increase in pensions, without having to deal with all these types of mechanisms” that come with the proposal that has been agreed upon between the government and the opposition. “It is very dangerous to approve a project that ultimately not only does not guarantee decent pensions, but at the same time also generates a whole series of knots that prevent pension increases in the future. And that is also complicated when one looks at the pension that people are going to receive. But, on the other hand, the system of workers’ savings funds cannot be based on big capital; it must be related to common objectives, to public objectives,” she said. The economist also believes that “whoever the political actors are who propose a short law, in reality they are going to win the entire political game. If the right does it, for example, if the right says we are going to reject this reform, that will allow it to win in the medium-long term the generation of a reform project that is in conditions, even in technical conditions for the proposals regarding, for example, the Industrial Organization. But at the same time, it will also allow it to guarantee the resolution of the pension problem.” Listen to Radio Usach on 94.5 FM 📻 or at www.diariousach.cl.
