Gluing polystyrene is seemingly the most trivial element of building insulation. Check how much precision this process really requires and how important its role is. Start by testing the substrate. You can perform an adhesion test using a special pull-off device or using small pieces of polystyrene. Glue about 8-10 cubes measuring 100x100 mm to the substrate. After 4-7 days, tear them off the wall. If the polystyrene tears, you can consider the test result positive. This means that the material bonds well with the substrate. Before you start gluing, you can additionally drag the boards with a grinding grater or coarse sandpaper. This will increase their adhesion. Mix the adhesive mortar carefully with water using a low-speed mixer. Remember to follow all the manufacturer's recommendations: leave the uniform mass for about 5 minutes and mix again. If it turns out that the mass is too thick, add a little water. Be careful not to overdo it with the amount of liquid - this can negatively affect the adhesive properties. Also, do not add water if the mass left in the container has set. To regain the desired consistency, simply mix it thoroughly. According to the manufacturer's recommendations, it is best to apply the adhesive using the strip-point method. Using a smooth trowel, create a frame of adhesive mortar at least 6 cm wide on the edges of the board. Apply 6 symmetrical patches of adhesive with a diameter of approx. 8 cm in the middle. After pressing it to the wall, the layer of the mass should cover at least 40% of the board's surface and have a thickness of no more than 10 mm. It should also not extend beyond the edges of the polystyrene. After applying the adhesive, press the board to the wall surface. Use a spirit level to level the polystyrene in relation to the substrate and the other boards. If there are any unevenness, quickly tear off the material, remove some of the adhesive mortar and try again. Glue the next boards in horizontal strips, working from the bottom to the top. When planning insulation work, remember the recommendations regarding temperature and air humidity. After gluing the polystyrene, carefully fill the gaps between the boards. In the case of small gaps, use low-expansion polyurethane foam. Larger gaps, up to 2 cm, may require the use of a wedge made of the same material. Remove excess material with a knife and sand the entire surface. Polystyrene should not be exposed to sunlight, which damages its structure. The next stages of insulation work should therefore be carried out immediately after its installation.
