This makes it interesting as early green fodder (April/May) in cattle farming and for use in biogas plants (May/June). Because of its low cellulose content, it is relatively easy to break down in the fermenter, unlike the straw of mature rye, for example. Green rye compared to rye as whole crop silage Whole crop silage (GPS) of rye, which is harvested in early to mid-June at the end of milk maturity or at the beginning of dough maturity, produces higher yields than green rye. In three-year studies, 110 to 141 dt dry matter (DM) per hectare (ha) were achieved on light to heavy sites. The fermentation to biogas produced methane yields of 3660 m³/ha. The yields for green rye were 51 to 73 dt DM/ha, which corresponded to 1590 m³ methane/ha.[1] Despite the lower DM and methane yields, green rye is interesting as a substrate for biogas plants, since high DM yields per hectare and year can be achieved with subsequent cultivation of corn. Corn needs warmth and is therefore not sown until the beginning of May; in combination with the winter-hardy rye, the growing season can therefore be better utilized. Cultivation and harvest The cultivation and production technology for green rye and GPS production do not differ significantly from grain production until the harvest. In Germany, the winter-hardy grain is sown from the end of July to the beginning of September. When producing GPS from rye, the DM content at harvest is 32 to 40%, so that it can be harvested directly with a special forage harvester. Green rye, on the other hand, has a DM content of only around 17 to 20% and therefore remains in the field for about a day after harvest to wilt before it is chopped up and collected with a forage harvester with a swath pickup attachment. With a DM content of around 30%, ensiling is possible and losses due to seepage are avoided. The disadvantage of growing green rye is the early harvest time. Since the green rye fields are often the only cover in an otherwise cleared field in April and May, they are visited during the day by deer, hares and ground-nesting birds and their young, which then have no chance of escaping when mowed. Whole crop silage (GPS) is green fodder preserved by fermentation (ensiling) or is used as a raw material (substrate) for the production of biogas. In this process, the entire above-ground biomass of the plant is harvested. The term is used primarily in relation to silage made from cereals and large-seeded legumes. As a rule, whole-crop silage refers to fermented feed made from cereals and large-seeded legumes, but not grass and clover silage, although these are included in the definition of "silage made from the entire above-ground parts of a plant". Examples of whole-crop silage are rye GPS, barley GPS or GPS from species mixtures such as oat-barley-pea GPS.[1] For maize silage, the term whole-crop silage is used when the difference to silage made from parts of the maize plant (corn cob mix) is to be emphasized. The plants are harvested at the beginning of the dough maturity, with a dry matter content of 35 to 40 percent. They are usually chopped up with the forage harvester during harvesting. The harvested crop is stored in silos under an airtight seal.
