In the series “Contemporary Witnesses”, actors of the South Tyrolean freedom struggle of the 1960s talk about their experiences. In the interview published here, Sepp Innerhofer, born in 1928, has his say. Sepp Innerhofer was part of the close leadership circle of the “South Tyrol Liberation Committee” (BAS) from the very beginning and was arrested after the Night of Fire and tortured by the Carabinieri. He then had to undergo several serious operations. In an extensive interview with the filmmaker Franz Haller, Sepp Innerhofer talks about his childhood under fascism, the exodus of young South Tyroleans from their homeland after the Second World War and the beginnings of the BAS. Innerhofer talks about the large rally in Sigmundskron and describes vividly how the decision to take a tougher approach slowly matured. He also talks about the outstanding role of women in the freedom struggle, the failures in the Night of Fire and the major trials in Trento and Milan. The “Zeitzeugen” series is supported by the “Südtiroler Heimatbund”.
