Winter sales, gift shopping, Black Friday sales – the main thing is to buy, buy, buy. In Germany, the consumption of clothing, furniture and other consumer goods, for example, is responsible for more than a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions per capita. Nevertheless, people like to shop a lot. But does consumption and buying really make you happy? And could abstinence lead to more well-being and a fairer world? Özlem is an influencer and is represented on all common social media platforms. 1.3 million people follow her on Tik Tok alone. The 32-year-old is best known for trying out and evaluating all kinds of products in her videos. From make-up to food to Advent calendars, everything is there. Özlem knows from her own experience that the content that works particularly well is the one in which she lets her followers participate in consumption: “For me, for example, it’s videos in which I spend several hours in the drugstore, tell my experiences and spend an average of between 300 and 800 euros.” Carl lives a completely different life. The 23-year-old lives in a six-meter-long trailer in the "Sieben Linden" eco-village, a community of around 150 people. Carl fights "for a good life for all and against exploitation and the obsession with growth." For him, being an activist also means consciously refraining from consumption. Carl sees social media as one cause of our society's overconsumption. He is particularly bothered by the consumer behavior of other people when they are aware of the consequences: "I wish that people would finally take responsibility for their actions." Dear community, At minute 13:28 we display an info box about the development of annual consumer spending per inhabitant between 1991 and 2021. The figures given there show an increase in spending of around 92% (from €11,112 to €21,321). However, the figures given are not adjusted for inflation. If you take the inflation rate into account, the change in consumer spending per capita between 1991 and 2021 is only 24%. For more meaningful information, we would have had to use the inflation-adjusted figures in the infobox, which unfortunately we only noticed after the video was published. Please excuse us!
