The second part of the film "The Conquest of the Caucasus". This time - from Peter I to the voluntary (not really) annexation of Georgia. So, the 18th century, Peter I wins the Northern War and proclaims himself emperor. He has ambitious plans: he dreams of conquering everything up to India, like Alexander the Great. And so Peter sets off on the Persian campaign - this is the beginning of an endless protracted war in the Caucasus. Which will last, with breaks, for about 300 years. And there is no feeling that it is over. Russia constantly attacks Turkey and seizes its territories: the Black Sea coast of Kuban, the fortress of Anapa (yes, yes, now it is a famous resort). And of course, the "originally" Turkish Crimea. What do we know about this? Almost nothing. Probably because Russian history is proud of defensive wars, and not so much of aggressive ones. Russia signs the Treaty of Georgievsk with Georgia, a symbol of Georgia’s mythical voluntary annexation to Russia that, in reality, played no role at all. Three years later, the Shah of Iran attacks Tbilisi, and Catherine II doesn’t even intend to help the Georgians. And at the end of the 18th century, colonial wars begin in the world. Britain conquers India, Napoleon invades Egypt, and Russia fights on several fronts. The so-called “Great Game” begins. And the Caucasus, as always, “is of great strategic importance.” Guest of the episode: Michael Khodarkovsky, Professor at Loyola University in Chicago Excerpts from letters by Agha Mohammed, Umma Khan, and Alexander I read by Stephen Oksner • Stephen Oksner on Irina Gorbacheva, Ed...
