Quotes and excerpts from the book “The Analects” by Confucius. Confucius, or K'ung Ch'iu (552 - 479 BC) was one of the greatest Eastern thinkers and philosophers of all time. Born in Tsou, a small town in China, Confucius worked in several professions throughout his life, including herding animals and librarian. At the age of 30, he began teaching with the goal of improving society. When he became a court philosopher, his life took a new direction. With this title, Confucius tried to get Chinese rulers to set good examples for society to follow. For him, good government began with “inner virtue,” which would earn leaders the respect of those under their command. Confucianism is a philosophical system concerned with political, social, pedagogical, ethical, and religious issues. In the 3rd century BC, Confucianism became the official religion of the government. For two thousand years, the doctrine was the main philosophical thought in China. Confucianism is based on seeking harmony within the world and the path to life (Tao). Human beings are, therefore, structured in four dimensions: the self, the community, nature and the sky. To achieve balance within these aspects, people would need to cultivate some virtues considered fundamental. They are: • Jen: is kindness, the highest virtue in Confucianism. It is characterized by love for others, reciprocity in conduct, benevolence and humanitarianism. • Chun-Tzu: is the superior man. This level of perfection is only achieved when one is wise, humble, fair, kind and sincere. • Cheng-ming: is appropriate behavior. In this way, man must follow rules of conduct and adapt his behavior during daily actions. • Te: is the power and authority necessary for governance. It must be carried out in a balanced and fair manner. • Li: is the awareness of the will of heaven. Rulers must provide good living conditions for the people so that they can worship their ancestors and gods properly. Thus, moral education must be offered and rituals allowed. • Wen: the arts, music and other expressions seen as the wealth of society. Confucianism believes that this knowledge and virtues are the necessary weapons to achieve prosperity in life and to find inner peace. Learn more at: https://www.educamaisbrasil.com.br/en... ????
