Philosophy Meeting with Jacinta Marta Fernandes Confucius was one of humanity’s greatest spiritual beings. His philosophy of life restored order to the state of civilization during a period of great turmoil and social decline. His profound teachings were crucial and had a strong influence on Eastern culture. Confucianism also inspired people from all over the world through its wise advice on humanist morality, universal brotherhood and the qualities of a good ruler. His timeless work, The Analects, was compiled by two generations of Confucius’ disciples through a collection of writings – discontinuous phrases, short stories and dialogues held with the Master. With a strong focus on rites, which are nothing more than customs or moral and civilizational conventions, and a strong relationship between education and politics, his teachings are useful and relevant to any government, any community, any family. It is a philosophy with practical application in society and in our lives. “To govern is to be upright”. Will we not all, in some way or in some aspect, be a ruler?
