Ariana Márquez O'Neal and Mariana Carla Lara, among other researchers, asked 30 teenagers questions to find out the reasons why they had boyfriends or girlfriends. The results were published under the title: What does it mean to be boyfriends? A psychosocial look at dating in Mexican teenagers, in the journal Políticas Sociales Sectoriales, from the University of Nuevo León, where it highlights that: In the reasons for adolescents to start a dating relationship, two perspectives are observed: the first focuses on considering dating as a simple strategic interaction, in which they start a dating relationship for the status it provides. While, in the second, adolescents perceive it as the development of romantic feelings and experiences that give them a notion of love. Dating in adolescence involves affections and interests of social perception. But, sometimes, they take on a violent tone, believing, for example, that the girlfriend must return or pay for what the boyfriend spends on her; or hiding personal objects in exchange for a kiss; being jealous under the pretext of love; separating the girlfriend or boyfriend from their friends and family because “they don't understand love.” For this reason, it is important to explain to teenagers that love involves good treatment, that is, respect for the person and their dignity, both for them and for the girlfriend or boyfriend.
