The play does not just focus on famous numbers sung by the characters, but also incorporates plenty of scenes featuring the orchestra and chorus, creating a classical and symphonic flow. [Conductor Focus] The Bells of Notre Dame Alan Menken arr. Kazuhiro Morita COMS-85129 Grade 4 Time 9 minutes 00 seconds Conductor, Tatsuya Shimono Performed by Hiroshima Wind Orchestra **This arrangement is distributed in Japan only due to copyright restrictions. About the work / Program notes The work is based on the novel "Notre-Dame de Paris," published in 1831 by Victor Hugo, the French Romantic poet and novelist known for "Les Miserables." After being released in 1996 as a feature-length animated film produced by Disney, a script was first translated into German and written, and it was performed as a stage musical in Berlin from 1999 to 2002. The connection between Germany and musicals may seem a little surprising, but after the great success of the Hamburg performance of "Cats" (composed by A. Lloyd Webber) in 1986, musical fever spread to cities all over the country, and Germany is now the third largest musical market in the world after the United States and the United Kingdom. Disney-related musicals are also very popular, and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," which has a world premiere record, is still being performed intermittently today. The American performance began in San Diego in 2014 much later, but it did not become a Broadway production, which can be said to be the center of musicals. The Japanese version by Shiki Theatre Company is based on the San Diego performance and began performances in December 2016, and as of spring 2018, performances are already scheduled in several cities. The music of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which has toured the world from Germany to America to Japan, is based on the music that Alan Menken (1949-) originally wrote for the animation, but over the 20-year history of the production, songs have been added and deleted, and scenes have been replaced. After listening to several recordings, I realized that there are significant differences between performances, and even the Japanese version and its American counterpart do not have the same titles, let alone the composition of the music itself. The music used in this wind orchestra arrangement has subtitles written in the appropriate parts of the score, but as mentioned above, these song titles are not the same for all Hunchback of Notre Dame. To avoid confusion, I would like to list the recordings and titles that each song originated from. 1. THE BELLS OF NOTRE DAME The Hunchback of Notre Dame (American Studio Cast Recording) 2. GOD HELP THE OUTCAST (American Studio Cast Recording) 3. SANCTUARY! (Original Japanese Soundtrack) 4. AND HE SHALL SMITE THE WICKED (Original Japanese Soundtrack) 5. THE BELLS OF NOTRE DAME (REPRISE)-from FINALE (Studio Cast Recording, USA) The director of the wind orchestra at Saitama Prefectural Ina Gakuen High School, Mr. Tomoki Ubata, who first aimed to perform this arrangement, came up with the overall composition. Rather than being limited to famous numbers sung by the characters, the arrangement also incorporates plenty of scenes featuring the orchestra and chorus, creating a classical and symphonic effect. The hymn-like chorus at the beginning has original lyrics in Latin, but due to possible pronunciation problems, the arrangement is unified in vowel singing. Also, as the title suggests, the sound of the bells is an important point in this piece, so if possible, it would be effective to use multiple chimes to create a church atmosphere.
