This city was born in 626 as a fortification ordered to be built by Edwin of Northumbria, hence its name: Edim-burg or Edwin's Fort. It has been the capital of Scotland since 1437, and thanks to its influential university, it was one of the most important cities in Europe on a cultural and intellectual level during the Enlightenment period. During the 17th century, the city limits were defined by a defensive wall, so instead of expanding the city along its length, they did so upwards, making the city one of the first in the world with tall buildings.
