The Wangerooge Island Railway is the only narrow-gauge railway operated by Deutsche Bahn and chugs along a total distance of almost six kilometers across the easternmost of the East Frisian Islands. Note: We uploaded a shortened online version in autumn 2023, now we are showing the complete episode. The meter-gauge railway is the only means of transport on the car-free island besides the bicycle - nothing works here without the train. Everything, goods, people and even garbage are transported here by rail - a land of milk and honey not only for railway enthusiasts. There is no fixed timetable, however. The railway is mainly used for feeder traffic between the island port and the town of Wangerooge. It takes 15 minutes to cover the 3.4-kilometer route along the Wadden Sea and runs mainly through the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. Only the railway is allowed to "enter" the national park. Passenger traffic only takes place here when there is enough water under the keel for passenger ships. The island railway is therefore dependent on the tide. Especially in the summer months, when the island is flooded with tourists, the narrow-gauge railway reaches its capacity limits. The Wangerooge Island Railway is a little out of date, but that is exactly what makes it a jewel on rails.
