Catechesis by Fr. Serafino M. Lanzetta, held on Radio Buon Consiglio on May 25, 2020. The current ingenuity on how to distribute the Eucharist to the faithful, with the strangest and most disrespectful ideas of the august Sacrament, would not have been possible if there had not been the indulgence to be able to distribute Communion in the hand. An indulgence that was created to remedy a liturgical abuse that spread in various nations starting in 1965: giving the Eucharist in the hand to the faithful. Today this indulgence has become indisputable. However, the faithful still have the right to receive Holy Communion according to the universal law of the Church, on their knees and in the mouth (even in times of pandemic), avoiding that a permission turns into an imposition. However, there is a theological vision that overrides everything, which can be summarized in one question: was the Eucharist instituted first and foremost to be received as food or to be adored? Or: which comes first, the sacrifice or the banquet? From a correct coordination of the two dimensions, subordinating the convivial moment to the sacrificial and adoring one, also derives the right, devout and most worthy way to receive Holy Communion.
