I finished reading the book “Chico Rei” by Agripa de Vasconcelos. In fact, I had already read the book a long time ago and no longer remembered its content. Agripa de Vasconcelos is a profound writer. He wrote a series of books about Minas Gerais at different moments in its history, which were called: “Sagas of the country of Gerais”: “Hunger in Canaan” is a novel written about the Latifundium Cycle in Gerais; “A Vida em Flor de Dona Beja” was a novel about the Settlement Cycle in Gerais; “Sinhá Braba” is a novel about the Agricultural Cycle in Minas. The book tells the life of Dona Joaquina de Pompéu; “Gongo-Soco” - About the Baron of Catas Altas is a novel about the Gold Cycle in Gerais; “Chica que Manda” - About Chica da Silva – a novel about the Diamond Cycle in Gerais; “Chico-Rei” - A novel about the Slavery Cycle in Minas Gerais; “São-Chico” - A novel about the Cycle of a River in Minas Gerais; “O Gado Negro e o Ouro Verde” – A novel about the Coffee Cycle in Minas Gerais. Chico-Rei lived in Congo, Africa, and did not have that name. He was called “Galanga”. After being taken prisoner with his people, he was brought to Brazil as a slave. In this condition, his name was changed to Francisco, before embarking with his family. During the crossing of the Atlantic, due to a storm, his wife and daughter were thrown into the sea. Upon arriving in Brazil, he was bought to work in the gold mines in Ouro Preto, formerly Vila Rica. Over time, he managed to buy his freedom, and freed more than 800 captives. He created the Festa do Congado in Ouro Preto, where he was crowned king of the blacks, with the governor’s authorization. It is a novel, but very well based on real events. Agrippa was extremely careful and, with that, allowed us access to the Congolese universe and the harshness of life in slavery. It is a book that is worth reading. I recommend it.
