The Mauser family has always kept their cows in an old vaulted barn. The animals are tied up. Feeding and mucking out is purely manual work. But that is now over, because on the outskirts of Mauterndorf in the Salzburg Lungau region, a new, highly modern barn has been built to the latest standards: When planning the project, the Mauser family placed great importance on the well-being of their animals and reducing the burden on human labor. This is reflected in a high level of automation: the cows are served feed fully automatically on a conveyor belt. A robot takes care of the milking. An automatic drinking system satisfies the calves' hunger. A bedding system provides dry lying areas with fresh chopped straw every day. A mucking out robot keeps the walking areas clean. Outside, a manure separator produces solid manure for arable farming and thin liquid manure for grassland. We accompanied the project with the camera from planning to commissioning. The two farmers Maximilian and Peter Mauser talk about their motivation for building the stable, the considerations for the technical implementation and their first experiences after the cows moved in.
