Colonia del Sacramento, located in southern Uruguay, on the banks of the Río de la Plata, is of great historical importance to Brazil, which ended up having a great influence on the current southern borders of the country. During the colonial period, Spain and Portugal fought over several regions of America, but one colony in particular was responsible for a fierce dispute between these two colonizing powers in the 16th century. This colony was Colonia del Sacramento, which was the scene of a relentless dispute between the Spanish and the Portuguese that lasted almost 100 years. But why was this colony so important that it deserved so much effort to conquer it?
