Every German drinks an average of 4 cups of the hot beverage a day. Some people simply like the taste and associate it with a feel-good moment. For others, the most important thing is that the drink wakes you up. But you also hear again and again that coffee is unhealthy. What is there to that? What is true and what is just a myth? What is in coffee? There is more to a coffee bean than meets the eye. One ingredient is well known, of course: caffeine. It is a so-called xanthine derivative, which is responsible for the wake-up effect. How does this work? By blocking certain receptors called adenosine receptors. Adenosine is a substance produced by the body that can make you tired when it docks onto these receptors. Caffeine sits on top of them like a screen and blocks the adenosine. As a result, we are no longer as tired. The wake-up effect is greatest about half an hour after consumption, but lasts between 3 and 5 hours. There are big individual differences. The second important ingredient is an acid, namely chlorogenic acid. This is also responsible for the fact that some people do not tolerate coffee so well because it upsets their stomach. I will come back to this in a moment. The third substance, antioxidants, is very important. It is assumed that they protect the cardiovascular system and our genes, for example, and can therefore reduce the risk of cancer. Medicine is not yet entirely sure about this. However, it is still recommended that people consciously consume fruit and vegetables, which contain a lot of antioxidants. It is assumed that many of the positive effects observed in coffee drinkers are due to the antioxidants. Caffeine itself also has antioxidant properties. Other ingredients found in coffee beans include proteins, minerals, etc. A good third of all ingredients are still unexplored. Coffee is harmful - is that true? As I listed at the very beginning of the video, coffee has been associated with many health concerns, some of which persist to this day. But what is actually true and what is a myth? When to consume coffee: When is the best time to drink coffee? For many coffee lovers, the first thing they do when they get up is to go to the coffee machine. But is that healthy?
