Codependency in addictions refers to the dysfunctional relationship of family members who care for people suffering from addiction. This codependency has various consequences: 1) it complicates the rehabilitation of the person with addiction, 2) it gives rise to a compulsive and controlling attitude towards the person affected by the addiction that facilitates the consumption or the means of consumption of the substance, 3) it gives rise to rejection of treatment or alternative solutions, among others. Codependency is most frequently observed in the romantic partners of people affected by addiction. For any treatment aimed at preventing substance use to be successful, the presence of codependency patterns in the environment of the person suffering from addiction must be identified. The codependent person must also participate in the treatment.
