Tiziano Bertè, photography director of the Italian War History Museum in Rovereto, opens the way through the clouds to reveal the deep wrinkles of Mount Zugna, in southern Trentino. In 1915, this territory was assigned by Cadorna to the First Army, which had mainly received a single defensive task: it had to absolutely prevent the Austro-Hungarian army from breaking out onto the plain and cutting off the supply routes with the majority of the troops deployed on the eastern front. Also here, at 1400 meters above sea level, at the narrowest point of the ridge, a trench of a special volume was dug into the rock, called the “Trincerone” of Zugna. Almost completely destroyed by the bombings of the conflict, today it returns to inhabit the panorama of the area and with its eyes of deep slits, among birches and cyclamens, it offers traces and indications of the incredible proximity between the enemy armies and the unparalleled drama of the war in this area.
