In this tutorial we are going to clear up all the confusion about mouthpieces and the relationship between the high register and the sound quality. Many musicians, especially trumpet players, trombonists or any brass instrument players, think that the mouthpiece is everything, they think that the sound quality, especially the high register, is thanks to the mouthpiece, but that is where the confusion lies. The mouthpiece is nothing more than the connection between you as an instrumentalist and the instrument that would be like an amplifier for what you play, it is nothing more. Logically, the construction of the mouthpiece, the material, the finish and the size of the mouthpiece will always influence your sound and your comfort when playing. But that should not be a factor that prevents you from playing in the high register and much less having a good sound on your instrument.
