The province of South Holland has recently started posting old and special film material from its own archives on its YouTube channel. This week, a very nice film was posted, showing unique footage of the demolition of the bunkers on Goeree. The gigantic concrete defences still posed a danger, even years after the surrender of the enemy. A large number of bunkers had ended up in the high-water line, causing the tide to form deep gullies and holes around the bunkers. This meant a direct risk of drowning for bathers! The defences also weakened the first water-retaining dune line, and as a result, approximately 75% of the total number of bunkers on the island were demolished, with the last major demolition taking place in the 1970s. The start of the demolition in the 1950s can be seen in this special video:
