On Saturday, at 10:30, we open a new series of City Histories with a theme related to the development of Bucharest. Under the multiple layers that have been laid down throughout history, we find the beginnings of the city. Descending along the thread of history, we learn how it all began with a swamp along the Dâmbovița River and with a network of waters around which slums were formed over time. At that time, however, the slum did not have the meaning it has today, it was just a territorial subdivision, formed around a parish or a boyar's estate. All of Bucharest's neighborhoods were slums at that time. Only after the modernization of the city, in the 18th century, did the center give up the name slum, the term being associated with peripheral, poor and underdeveloped areas. The first slums develop in the vicinity of the Royal Court, to the north: Colțea, Sfântu Gheorghe Nou și cel Vechi Scaune, Sărindar, Trâmbițași, Săpunari, Țigănia, Tabacii, and, to the south, the Calicimii Slum. Other slums are gradually formed. In the southern area; Antim, Golești, Vladica, Slobozia Domnească, Cărămidarii de jos. Around the Royal Court, autonomous formations expand concentrically around the churches and boyar courts, reaching at the beginning of the 19th century as far as Schitu Măgureanu, Pitar Moș, Batiștei - to the north, and on the southern border Calicii, Țigănia Mitropoliei, Boștenii-Tabaci.
