Capital of the province of Misiones and capital of the Capital department. It is located on the left bank of the Paraná River, which separates it from Paraguay, in the southwest of the province and in the north of the Capital department. It is the most populated city in Misiones and its administrative, commercial and cultural center. In its beginnings it was built around the port on the Paraná River, and its growth took a while to materialize because it was one of the last areas of the Argentine territory to be populated. However, it is currently one of the cities with the most activity and growth in the entire NEA region (northeast Argentina). Its influence extends to the neighboring city of Garupá, with which it forms the Greater Posadas. The San Roque González de Santa Cruz bridge, stretched over the Paraná River, connects it with the neighboring city of Encarnación (Republic of Paraguay). Other reference points include Puerto Iguazú, located 310 kilometers from Posadas, and Asunción, Paraguay, 380 kilometers away. The historic center, located in the city center, is one of the highest sites in the territory. In its checkerboard layout, the most emblematic historical attractions and places of interest of the city stand out around the main square, namely: the Government House, the City Cathedral, the Italian Society, and other nearby places of interest such as Paseo Bossetti and the Lucas Braulio Areco Municipal Museum. On the other hand, the El Brete beach resort represents another strong point of recreational activities, located at the opposite end of the waterfront to Costa Sur beach, it has had an important gastronomic development in recent years, accompanied by investment in public works. In turn, two of the most important nautical and sports clubs are located in the surrounding area offering activities to members and non-members. Other important activities that take place around El Brete are the walks in the Itá Stream Urban Reserve, a wetland in the heart of the city that encourages bird watching with more than 200 species surveyed. Recreational and sporting activities are also organised on the beach for the general public, such as beach volleyball and football, Zumba classes, dance, live bands, among others.
