Where was the new centre of Łódź marked out during the Polish People's Republic? Is Saspol an architectural hit or kitsch? When did the first plans for the revitalisation of Łódź appear? Compared to other Polish cities, Łódź was not destroyed during World War II. This does not mean that it emerged from the war unscathed. The destruction was noticeable - and this opened up opportunities for architects. However, they had to navigate between the needs and realities of the socialist economy. In the last episode of the 4th season of the podcast "Łódź through the ages. Conversations like over coffee", Justyna Tomaszewska talks to Błażej Ciarkowski about the changes in urban space that took place during the Polish People's Republic and after 1989. This is a story about how and for whom a city is designed. Błażej Ciarkowski talks, among other things, about: about the spatial development plans from the 1960s that shaped the Łódź we know today, about the housing estates built in the Polish People's Republic, about the many attempts to build a new city center. Our interviewee recalls the figures who made key decisions at the time and explains the motives that guided them. Błażej Ciarkowski also looks at the contemporary architecture of Łódź and encourages us to consider how investments such as the construction of the Fabryczny railway station or the reconstruction of Wolności Square affect the lives of Łódź residents. #łódź #history
