Interpretation of the Sunday Gospel with Father Niklaus Schneider OCist from the Cistercian monastery Priorat Neuzelle @Cistercian Neuzelle October 13, 2024, 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time (B) In this Sunday Gospel, the attitude of performance is contrasted with grace, an undeserved gesture from God towards us, a gift. Salvation is not the result of a reward, it cannot be grasped by one's own strength, but is ultimately the action of God. In the interpretation of this Sunday Gospel, Father Niklaus leads us with a view to the effects on the spiritual life. Mark 10: 17-30: At that time a man ran up to Jesus, fell on his knees before him and asked him, 'Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?' Jesus answered, 'Why do you call me good? No one is good except God one. You know the commandments: Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not robbery, Honor your father and mother.' He said to him, 'Teacher, I have kept all these commandments from my youth.' Jesus looked at him and embraced him and said, 'You still lack one thing: go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.' When the man heard this, he was sad and went away sad, for he had great wealth. Then Jesus looked at his disciples and said to them, 'How hard it is for those who have great wealth to enter the kingdom of God!' The disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus said to them again, 'Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. But they were exceedingly amazed and said to one another, "Who then can be saved?" Jesus looked at them and said, "With men this is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible." Peter said to him, "Look, we have left everything and followed you." Jesus answered, "Truly I say to you, everyone who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and the gospel's will receive a hundredfold. Now in this time he will receive houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, albeit with persecutions; and in the age to come eternal life.
