How much of the Orient is there in Christianity and thus in our culture? This question leads orientalist Daniel Gerlach on a journey almost 2000 years into the past. In the Middle East he is on the trail of ancient cults and rituals. In Lebanon he visits Baalbek, the former "Heliopolis", where the Romans built a super-sanctuary. From there he travels to ancient Mesopotamia, today's Iraq, where he meets the "Mandaeans", a religious community that preserves ancient rituals. At the end of his journey he ends up in a land of wonders: Egypt. Christians still live there today, called "Copts", and are one of the largest Christian communities in the Orient. //Team// Authors: Daniel Gerlach, Katrin Sandmann //Chapter// 00:00 Intro 00:43 Worship of the sun god Sol 05:31 Prophet John the Baptist 09:35 Belief in eternal life in ancient Egypt This video is a production of ZDF, in collaboration with Kobalt Productions. #TerraX #Christianity #orient More videos on the topic: https://www.zdf.de/dokumentation/doku...
