Description: 10cm. Adult male: Dark red feathers with distinctive white spots. Winter hens and males: Red bill and flanks, brown upperparts with white spots on wings. Juveniles: No prominent flanks and wing spots. Call: High-pitched 'psip', especially in flight. Distribution: Northeast and South Vietnam. Mainly found in lowland areas, but distributed to altitudes of about 1,500 metres. Status: Sedentary species, uncommon. Habitat: Mostly found in secondary shrublands, grasslands, damp and open areas. Nests in grassy clumps, not too high above the ground. Fast-flying.
