※This video is part of <Documentary K - Textbook Revolution, Part 1: Why Are Textbooks Difficult?> broadcast on May 4, 2023. Lee Hyeon-i, an ordinary second-grade elementary school student, studies at home under her mother's guidance instead of receiving private education. She reviews her Korean language studies, but the Korean language textbook is full of words she doesn't know, and the example sentences provided are also difficult to understand. Since it is difficult to understand just through school classes, she always has to get help from her mother. It's not just Korean that is difficult. Elementary school students are complaining that Korean, math, and even social studies are difficult. So why are our textbooks difficult? To find out why, we conducted a project to swap textbooks from Finland, a powerhouse in education, and Korea. We swapped textbooks for the 'plane figures' section, a common unit of 4th grade elementary school mathematics. As a result, Finnish students who took classes with Korean textbooks had difficulty understanding, while Korean students who took classes with Finnish textbooks had a higher level of understanding. There was no difference in the amount of learning, but there was a difference in the content compared to Korean textbooks. Here, we compared the elementary school mathematics curriculum of each country and found that in fact, in many cases, Korean students learned units earlier than 4th graders in other countries. As a result, the faster progress and greater learning volume than the developmental process led to stress about mathematics. The burden of mathematics caused a decrease in confidence and interest in mathematics, and produced many dropouts. The same goes for Korean language. We examined the difficulties of the 2nd grade Korean language textbook using the [reading index], which measures the difficulty of the text and the level of the learner's reading ability. Although 900 points is the appropriate reading index for 2nd graders, there were many high-level reading units that exceeded the standard. Over the past 70 years, we have revised the curriculum 12 times. And whenever complaints about textbooks erupt, problems with the curriculum are pointed out. Some subjects in elementary school textbooks that were maintained by the state have been changed to a government-approved version, but because there is a lot of content to teach while the number of pages in the textbook is not limited, textbooks are created by compressing a large amount of content, and ultimately, school classes can only be taught in a way that is easy for students to understand, say textbook writers and publishers. ✔ Program name: Documentary K - Textbook Revolution, Part 1.
