"You just can't turn back time..." says 25-year-old Dominik, looking back on his difficult childhood. When he was 8 years old, director Astrid Schult met him and filmed his everyday life. At that time, Dominik lived in a prefab housing estate in Berlin-Hellersdorf, a district marked by poverty. As a young boy, he had to take on tasks from adults and look after his younger siblings. He walked alone with his little sister through the big city, rode the tram with her without a ticket and went to the Arche, a Christian children's and youth center, after school. The single mother was at home, unemployed and overwhelmed with her three children. Dominik was often left to fend for himself. His greatest wish: to be able to go to the circus. After our 'People up close' film "Circus isn't" in 2007, television, radio and newspapers across Germany reported on Dominik. It was about child poverty, but also neglect. About two years later, Dominik is taken away from the family and placed in a youth welfare facility. However, contact with the author never completely breaks off. 17 years after the first film, she meets the adult Dominik again. She goes with him in search of his lost childhood. She wants to know what has happened since then and why. What traces has his difficult childhood left in his life? Do children like him even have a chance in our society?
