“Teak” is an important economic plant of Thailand since the past. In the past, England had concessions in areas in Burma until there was a shortage of teak in Burma and they saw the abundance of teak forests in Lanna. They therefore contacted to buy teak from Lanna, where the teak forest area was under the control of the Lanna ruler at that time. After the Bowring Treaty, there was an economic change in Siam, opening up opportunities for timber companies from the West, leading to the birth of the teak industry. Teak was transported to sell in various places, as well as exported to foreign countries, and many foreign timber companies were established in the country. During the reign of King Rama V, the “Forest Department” was established. The important factor leading to the establishment of the Forest Department was “teak”, an important product of Thailand, and foreign companies were able to obtain concessions until 1954. The teak concessions nationwide, known as “forest closure”, were cancelled in 1989.
