On April 26, 1986, reactor block four of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded. It was the nuclear super-GAU. Around a hundred times more radioactivity than in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was released and the whole of Europe was contaminated. The reactor site has been a major construction site since then and securing the ruins is a major challenge.
