William Dorrit is a gentleman who, as he fails to manage his own affairs, is unable to pay his debts and is thrown into prison, along with his family. Amy, little Dorrit, is born in prison. Her mother dies when she is eight years old. After a while, the prison guard also dies, who had bequeathed all his wealth to the little girl, but without a will. When Amy was about 16, Arthur Clennam returns to London to see his mother, a year after his father's death. Shortly before he died, Mr. Clennam gave Arthur a watch with the inscription SNU (don't forget), which he was supposed to show his mother. Arthur wants to tell his mother that he no longer wants to work at the family business. In the house he also sees Amy who, although she lives in prison, works for the Clennams. Arthur wants to know the story of little Amy Dorrit. At some point the Dorrit family becomes rich, but Amy does not love this new way of life, but has feelings for Arthur, whom she will eventually marry.
