I visited Barra da Estiva, in Bahia, to get a closer look at the family farming that transforms people’s lives in this region of Chapada Diamantina. The city is known for its stunning landscapes and for being an important hub for rural production, especially for strawberries, coffee, tangerines and blackberries. My first stop was at a property where Renan, along with his father and brother, dedicates themselves to growing strawberries. They work hard, picking and packaging the strawberries for distribution, ensuring production all year round. The routine is intense, starting early and requiring continuous dedication. Next, I visited Donizete, a blackberry farmer, who explained how the fruit is an easy-to-manage and low-cost crop, with two harvest cycles per year. There I also took the opportunity to taste the flavors of his mother Dona Maria’s famous free-range chicken. On the property of Neide, Renan’s cousin, I saw tangerines being produced. She shared her journey back to farming after living in São Paulo. Fruit production allowed his family to improve their lives, building a house and buying a car. To finish, I visited Ângelo's farm, a coffee producer with over 30 years of experience.
