This is episode 7 of our bike trip through the northern region of Minas Gerais. We left Montes Claros for Januária, the oldest city on the Circuito Velho Chico. A film festival produced by Cine Barranco took place there from July 18 to 21. We went to see and participate in this event, which featured a program packed with art and culture. Then we headed to the village of Fabião, the gateway to the Cavernas do Peruaçu National Park, in Minas Gerais. The Cavernas do Peruaçu National Park is a place where beautiful landscapes are framed by prehistoric rock art, in ancient archaeological sites of international importance and its caves of colossal magnitude. The Conservation Unit was created in 1999 and has an area of 56,448 hectares, which includes the municipalities of Januária, Itacarambi and São João das Missões, in the northern region of Minas Gerais. The Peruaçu Caves National Park offers visitors a variety of options and is constantly evolving. To see them all, you will need more than one day of visiting. Choose according to your interests and physical condition. Interesting fact: The origin of the name given to the valley - Peruaçu - is not known for sure, but it is said in the region that the Indians who historically lived there (Xacriabás, since the mid-16th century) called it this, with the following connotation: Peru = hole (ditch, crack); Açu = large. It is understood, therefore, that the references may be related to the then-called canyon or to the large caves formed in the limestone rock in the Peruaçu valley. The Park was recently structured and has trails, viewpoints and walkways to protect archaeological sites. It also has a group of environmental guides trained and accredited by ICMBio to ensure a safe and unique experience, on a breathtaking tour. All visits require a guide.
