Language and the backlands permeate Elomar’s entire universe – from his compositions to his literature. Gilson Bonfim, a friend of Elomar and a researcher at Fundação Casa dos Carneiros, introduces the backlands and comments on how the musician incorporates both normative and colloquial language into his work. João Omar, maestro, musician and son of Elomar, tells his father what the backlands mean to him and the importance of his work as a treasure that preserves the beloved catingueiro – a language of the backlands that Elomar reproduced and named “sertanezo” (sertanejos). The 25th edition of the Ocupação Itaú Cultural program invites the public to enter a space of contemplation and let themselves be carried away by the enchantments of the deep backlands.
