Monguelfo Castle or Welsperg Castle is the oldest fortified complex between Brunico and Lienz and is located a few minutes' walk from the town of Monguelfo, on top of a sunny hill. The castle was built in 1140 by the brothers Schwikher and Otto von Welsperg. The Von Welsperg family was a powerful and influential noble lineage, especially with Baron Guidobold Von Welsberg, who received the title of count from Leopold I. From Monguelfo Castle, the Lords Von Welsperg administered a large fiefdom. As for the castle, the ancient and very high keep dates back to the years 1126-1140 and is undoubtedly the oldest part of the castle - it was perfect for seeing into the distance and observing the surrounding area well. Only a short time later, the small Romanesque chapel, a servants' building and the palace were built. Between the 15th and 16th centuries, the entire complex was renovated and expanded several times. Unfortunately, in 1765 a fire seriously damaged the castle and destroyed some parts of it. Despite the restorations that followed, the castle was no longer inhabited. Today the Curatorium of Monguelfo Castle takes care of the complex and organizes numerous concerts, exhibitions and other events every summer. 01.07.2024 - 01.09.2024 Mon - Fr from 10:00 to 16:00 Sun from 14:00 to 18:00:
