Castiglione is part of the Garfagnana region in the province of Lucca, and is one of the sixteen municipalities that make it up. The town is located on an Apennine buttress on the left bank of the Serchio river at an altitude of 545 m above sea level, but the municipal territory has an altitude that varies from 350 m above sea level up to 1700 m above sea level of the Apennine peaks that separate it from the territory of Frignano (Modena). It is about 6 km from Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, home of the Union of Municipalities of Garfagnana and is located along the provincial road of Passo delle Radici. The territory is rich in chestnut trees, conifers and beech trees and is crossed by numerous paths that are very interesting from a tourist-environmental point of view. The construction of castra, that is, lands equipped with fortifications, dates back to the period of Roman domination, among these CASTRUM LEONIS, (Lion's Castle) Castiglione the strongest in the valley. Since those times it was held in high regard for its position of control on the road that led to the San Pellegrino pass, one of the easiest passages for armies in the Apennines. Because of its strategic position, the lion castle had a very tormented past and was often forced to show its claws to defend itself from numerous sieges. The first, by the people of Lucca, in 1170 caused much damage. The surrender forced Lucca to rebuild and elevate it to the seat of Vicaria, but because of the bullying and onerous taxes imposed, Castiglione promoted a league of Garfagnana municipalities against the republic itself. In this video, a short visit to the village and a historical Medieval parade. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
