Growing carrots is relatively easy. Even a novice gardener can handle it. Its seeds are sown directly into the permanent location, directly into the ground, in beds, raised beds or large containers. There are many varieties that we can sow and grow in our gardens. Carrots can surprise us with their unusual colour and shape. Not only orange varieties have already appeared, but also purple, white and yellow ones, as well as those with conical, cylindrical or spherical roots. Depending on the variety, we sow carrot seeds from the end of March to the beginning of June, directly into the permanent location. In stores, we can choose from early varieties of carrots, for the first harvest, as well as medium-early and late varieties. Where winters are not too harsh and the soil warms up quickly in spring, carrots can be sown in autumn, just before the frosts arrive, so that they do not have time to germinate. They will only germinate in spring, when nature itself chooses the germination date. In this way, the harvest is usually accelerated by about 10 days. On the bed, we mark not too deep one- or two-centimetre grooves, spaced about 15-30 cm apart, and regularly place the seeds on their bottom. We gently cover them, tamp them down and water them with a dispersed stream so as not to wash away the seeds. Then remember to water frequently if it is not raining. In the cultivation of root vegetables, it is important to prepare the soil well in advance. Before sowing the plants, make sure that the beds are weeded. The germination period of carrots is 10-20 days. However, depending on the weather conditions, this time can be extended to 5 weeks. During this time, the weeds that are left will have had time to grow quite well. After 3-4 weeks, when the young plants have reached 3-4 cm in height, it is worth removing the weakest plants, leaving the stronger ones spaced 3-8 cm apart. It is best to thin them out after the rain. The uprooted plants should be removed immediately, and the holes should be buried and compacted. Carrots thrive best when the average daily temperature is between 15 and 21 degrees Celsius. However, this plant does not have high requirements in this respect. It tolerates both light frosts and heat. However, if the temperature remains below 10 degrees Celsius for several weeks in the first two months of cultivation, this can cause the plant to "bolt". The storage root begins to form about a month after emergence. Carrots grow best in fertile, humus-rich, deeply cultivated and quickly drying soil. Heavy, waterlogged and stony soils are not suitable for them. Before sowing, the bed should be carefully dug up and weeded, and also enriched with fertilizer, e.g. mature compost or organic fertilizer from the BIO series. Carrots should not be grown in the first year after manure, because then they can form forked roots. This is a plant with average nutritional requirements. It grows well in soil with a pH of 6-6.5, and is not sensitive to slight acidification. It is worth providing it with a sunny spot and a good water supply, especially during the formation of the storage root. A lack of water during the last two months of this plant's growth, when the roots are most intensively developing and growing, can cause them to be thin and forked. Carrots can also be grown on a balcony or terrace, but we need a deep container. In this way, you can sow varieties for early harvest, or those that produce small roots. You can buy, for example, carrot seeds, which with their spherical, small shape are more like radishes. The most important care work in the cultivation of this vegetable includes watering, weeding and thinning the plants. Both thinning and weeding with simultaneous loosening of the top layer of soil should be carried out several times during the season. Carrots are sensitive to soil crusting. Depending on the needs and variety, carrots can be harvested 3-6 months after sowing. In practice, larger specimens can usually be pulled out from June as needed. Late varieties are harvested in autumn, before the frosts. They are dug out using a fork, shovel or spade. Most often, the end of October or the beginning of November is the final date for carrot harvesting. Carrots can be stored in a dark and cool place, in boxes, sandwiching the individual layers of vegetables with sand. For winter storage, choose carrot roots that are undamaged, dry and free from signs of pests. We can also freeze carrots, after blanching them.
