Charlemagne is considered the father of Europe. With him the three elements that constitute Western culture, the Greco-Roman way of thinking, the social and legal structure of the Germans and Christianity were fused. With him the idea of a Christian Empire was born. This Imperial unit was divided after his death, the Carolingian Empire was divided between his three sons, so the history of France, Northern Italy and Germany ran on separate paths. In the 9th century the idea of Empire was revived and Otto created the Holy Roman Empire, which over time would be a rather nominal union without real political power over the German princes. This would finally be destroyed by Napoleon Bonaparte when he invaded all of Europe.
