What is a thing exactly and what is the relationship between things and reality? It can be said that episteme, the ancient philosophical science, started from this question, providing two great and in many ways opposite solutions: the ontological one of Aristotle and that of Democritean atomistic mechanism. In fact, these two instances, these two visions, these two formidable argumentative machines have reached us, but in modernity they have undergone a significant modification of the question itself: not what is the essence of the thing, but what is the truth of our knowledge of things. With reference to both Kant and Heidegger's famous Question of the thing, the Seminar will take on this further path, the outcome of which, gradually imposed on contemporary culture, is the irreconcilable dualism between the use of the world and its understanding, or between the appropriation and technological production of multiple things and knowledge and the global unity of meaning of knowledge. The impossible simultaneity of use and understanding, of effectiveness and overall reason, a characteristic figure of European nihilism, constitutes the further question and the last frontier that the Seminar will take on, in its problematic but intentionally constructive path of research. What it means and what we can think about today and how the problem of the relationship between unity and multiplicity, the absolute of essence and the reality of individuals, is posed in new ways, is the final theme of the journey.
