This week's Caminhos da Reportagem will show the beautiful landscapes, the rich fauna and the historical importance of the archaeological sites in the region of São Raimundo Nonato, in Piauí, which attracts researchers and tourists from all over the world every year. Among the scholars is Niede Guidon, a world-renowned Brazilian archaeologist who came from France exclusively to look after the sites of Serra da Capivara and Confusões. In 2011, the city received more than 18 thousand tourists. Hotels, restaurants and the entire infrastructure of the city have deserved investments and improvements to continue receiving more visitors. During the program, you will visit the Serra da Capivara National Park, a World Heritage Site created to protect areas that hold the greatest prehistoric wealth in Brazil. The natural beauty and cave paintings are the biggest attractions of these places, which still have tourism and crafts as an important contribution to the economy of the region. There are 1,350 catalogued archaeological sites, of which 90% have cave paintings. In Boqueirão da Pedra Furada alone, one of the most visited spots in Serra da Capivara, there are over 100 sets of paintings. The Ceramics Workshop, a private initiative that produces handicrafts, is also a positive point in the region. The strategy was created to generate income for the population and reduce hunting of animals, which is still a problem along with deforestation. Currently, Serra da Capivara is home to over 200 birds, over 30 species of mammals and around 17 types of snakes. Caminhos da Reportagem continues its journey and goes to Parque Nacional das Confusões. Between one park and another there are 1,600 archaeological sites and countless caves. Serra das Confusões has 400 km of trails and sandstone walls. The park was created in 1998, but was only opened to visitors in 2011. With 350 catalogued sites, it has 802 thousand hectares of a unique biome rich in fauna and flora. It is an open-air museum with numerous prehistoric paintings and engravings.
