Everyone knows the incredible wealth of heritage in the Dordogne department. Why protect historical monuments? What is the cost and what is the benefit? The Château de Biron, 60 kilometers southwest of Sarlat, is one of the centerpieces of the heritage of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. It has been a fixture in the landscape for 1,000 years and was the stronghold of the powerful Gontaut-Biron family. Sébastien Cailler is responsible for the Château de Biron, this young thirty-something whose passion for this magnificent building is contagious, guides Éric through its history. With Ludovic Pizano, Heritage Curator at the Dordogne Departmental Council, we will understand why it is important to protect and restore our heritage. The second stage of Eric's journey is the bastide of Monpazier, founded in 1284 by the lord of Biron in the name of the king of England of whom he was a vassal. Eight centuries later, Monpazier is considered the model bastide. It must be said that seen from the sky, it offers an exact vision of the urban rigor of these new towns created from the 13th century. This place full of history is an ideal setting for artisans. Carole Arnaud lives with her family in the bastide, but she has also chosen to set up her bookbinding and restoration workshop for old books there. The third treasure that we invite you to discover: the cloister of the abbey of Cadouin. The abbey was founded at the beginning of the 12th century in the middle of the forest of La Bessède, then completely uninhabited. Over the centuries, the religious community continued to grow, leaving visible traces in the rich architecture. For 30 years, Laurence Roche has been telling the story of the Cadouin cloister with passion; she knows every last detail.
